JAIPUR: A man who issued a fake certificate of registration for selling hallmarked gold to a city jeweller was arrested on Thursday. A USA-based businesswoman Charish Nortez purchased jewellery worth approximately Rs 6 crore and was duped due to this.
The accused, identified as Nand Kishore, was arrested after interrogation.
Additional DCP (North), Bajrang Singh Shekhawat, who is investigating the case, revealed that for many years, the US-based jeweller was involved in business transactions with city-based jewellers Gorav Soni and his father Rajendra Soni. The duo allegedly sold her 9-carat gold jewellery instead of 14-carat and moissanite instead of diamonds, which is approximately 50 times cheaper. Singh said, "During an exhibition in the USA, Nortez got the jewellery tested and realised she had been cheated. She came to Jaipur and confronted them; however, the jewellers lodged a case against her in Manak Chowk police station in March 2023." Following a case against her, the USA embassy got involved, and the matter was investigated under the direction of Jaipur commissioner. "To check gold and diamond purity, the hallmark certificates were verified.
It was revealed that these certificates were not authentic, and the person who issued them was arrested," said Singh.
The duo is absconding. A hallmarking licence is mandatory in India to manufacture and sell gold. However, during the investigation, it was revealed that many jewellers are selling jewellery after procuring fake certificates from laboratories.
