New Delhi. Justice Sanjeev Khanna took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of the country on Monday. President Draupadi Murmu administered him the oath of office and secrecy. Sanjeev Khanna will remain CJI till May 13, 2025. He has replaced DY Chandrachud.

Uncle's bitterness with Indira Gandhi

64-year-old Justice Khanna's tenure will be only 6 months. He will retire on 13 May 2025. So far, as a Supreme Court judge, he has written 65 judgments and has been a part of 275 benches. Sanjeev Khanna's uncle Hansraj Khanna was also a judge in the Supreme Court but he opposed the emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. Due to this, despite being senior, Hansraj Khanna could not become the Chief Justice. Justice MH Beg was made CJI in his place. Hansraj Khanna resigned in protest against this attitude of the government.

Same-sex marriage decision was different from

Recently, in the decision related to AMU, Sanjeev Khanna supported giving minority status to Aligarh University. He had distanced himself from the decision on same-sex marriage. During his 6-month tenure, CJI Khanna will hear 5 major cases. This includes cases like marital rape, the validity of the Bihar caste census, the Sabarimala case review, sedition, and the appointment process of Election Commission members.
