KEONJHAR: Three persons were killed and 12 others were injured when a speeding trailer ploughed into several vehicles on National Highway-49 in Keonjhar district on Wednesday.
Sources said the accident took place when the trailer was attempting to overtake trucks parked along the NH-49 between Thakurdihi and Putulupani chowk. The driver managed to flee from the spot. The trailer, which was going from Mumbai to Kolkata, first crushed a two-wheeler.
One deceased yet to be identified
This resulted in the death of a small scrap trader from Nayagada, whose identity is yet to be ascertained.
Subsequently, the trailer hit a bike from behind, killing Kusa Behera (36) of Upperkaipur on the spot. Khageswar Behera (28) sustained injuries and later succumbed on the way to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. The trailer also collided with two cars and an autorickshaw, leaving 12 more injured. They were admitted to the district headquarters hospital.
Trinath Sethy, IIC of Sadar police station, said, "We are investigating the incident after registering a case. The vehicle has been seized."
