New Delhi: On Tuesday, August 13, the Calcutta High Court has ordered a CBI investigation into the rape-murder case of a Kolkata trainee doctor. The court has questioned the investigation of the West Bengal government and reprimanded it. The division bench headed by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam expressed displeasure over the police action and questioned why the then principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, has not been questioned yet. The court also said that many important things have been missed in the investigation. When Dr. Sandeep Ghosh had resigned from his post taking moral responsibility, how could he be immediately appointed to another medical college?
Order to send Sandeep on long leave
The High Court directed the West Bengal government to send Dr. Sandip Ghosh on long leave. The court said that if the government does not take any action on this, then the court itself will pass the order. The court clarified that the death of the doctor has not had any special effect on Sandip Ghosh, so he should stay at home and does not need to work anywhere.
Resignation of Principal and new position
Dr. Sandip Ghosh resigned from his post on Monday, 12 August, saying that the trainee doctor was like his daughter and he was resigning as a parent. However, within 12 hours of his resignation, the state government appointed him as the principal of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, which caused a lot of resentment among the doctors.
Hearing on several petitions continues in the High Court
The Calcutta High Court is hearing several petitions related to this case, one of which is from the parents of the trainee doctor. They have demanded from the court that the investigation into their daughter's death be conducted under the supervision of the court.
