The name of the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India has been finalized. Sanjay Malhotra will replace the current RBI governor Shaktikanta Das. His term will be of 3 years. The Union Cabinet approved it on Monday. Sanjay Malhotra will start working as the RBI governor on 11 December 2024.

The term of the current Governor Shaktikanta Das is ending on 10 December. The very next day, i.e. on 11 December, Wednesday, Sanjay Malhotra will start working as the Governor of RBI. Currently, he is serving as the Revenue Secretary. Before that, he had worked as the Secretary of the Department of Financial Services under the Union Finance Ministry.
Who is Sanjay Malhotra?
Sanjay Malhotra is a 1990 batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre. He studied engineering at IIT Kanpur. After this, he completed his master's at Princeton University. After this, he served in high positions in many departments.
He has experience of working in departments like Finance, Power, IT, Mines, and Taxation. Along with being an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, he has also been the Chairman and MD of REC. He has good experience in handling finance and tax-related responsibilities under the state and central government.
The government has approved the name.
The work of RBI is handled by the Central Board of Directors. Malhotra has better experience of working on that board. That is why he became the first choice of the government.

Current RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das took over the responsibility after Urjit Patel resigned from the post of RBI Governor. During his tenure, problems like Corona epidemic and inflation were also dealt with very well.
