Sundar Pichai-led Google recently announced a reduction in pricing for its Maps platform for developers in India, effective August 1, 2024.
The company will cut the costs of its core services by up to 70% and will start accepting payments in Indian Rupees (INR).
However, Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal was quick to respond to Google's new pricing strategy.
On July 18, Krutrim, India's first Al unicorn founded by Aggarwal, unveiled a competitive pricing structure for Ola Maps to promote the ExitGoogleMaps trend and encourage Indian developers to adopt its mapping and location-based services.
Ola Maps introduced a free tier for all its mapping and location-based APIs, allowing developers up to 5 million API calls per month at no cost. This includes APIs such as autocomplete, reverse geocoding, vector tiles, and directions.
For higher volumes, Ola Maps claims its rates are 50% lower than Google's reduced prices.
Aggarwal also announced that developers who commit to Ola Maps for over three years will have their charges waived for the first two years.
Additionally, Ola is offering three years of free access to Ola Maps APIs for all startups and small businesses building on ONDC.
"The world is watching, and India is rising," Aggarwal wrote in a blogpost.
