Giving a big relief to Airtel, Jio, BSNL, and Vi, TRAI has now extended the deadline for implementing the message traceability rule till December 10. The telecom regulator has given access service providers another 10 days to complete the compliance. Earlier, the message traceability rule was to be implemented from November 1, for which a deadline of October 31 was given. However, it was later extended to November 30.

What is message traceability?

The telecom regulator had directed access service providers (ASPs) i.e. telecom operators to implement traceability to track commercial messages sent in bulk. This is mandatory to track fake messages sent in bulk, because if there is no traceability system, then it will not be possible to track from which location the message has been sent. In such a situation, it will be difficult to catch the scammers.

TRAI has now extended the deadline for all access service providers to implement this system to 10 December. After the traceability system is implemented, the person sending fake messages will be easily tracked. Earlier, telecom companies had argued to TRAI that there are many technical hurdles in implementing this system, due to which they should be given more time. After this, the regulator had decided to give them an extension of one month.

Rules for fake calls and messages

Recently TRAI has clarified that with the implementation of this rule, there will be no delay in getting OTP to anyone. The government has taken several steps in the last few months to curb the growing cybercrime in the country. TRAI has implemented new rules from October 1 to stop fake calls and messages. Under this rule, telemarketing companies sending messages in bulk will have to whitelist themselves. Apart from this, the message template suggested by TRAI will have to be followed. Messages without whitelisting will be considered fake and will be blocked at the network level itself.
