Centre has decided to observe June 25, the day the #Emergency was declared in 1975, as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced today (July 12).

'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' will commemorate massive contributions of all those who endured inhuman pains of 1975 Emergency, Amit Shah said in a statement.

In a post on social media platform X, Shah said, "On 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, showing her dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing emergency in the country. Lakhs of people were jailed without any reason and the voice of the media was suppressed."

The Emergency refers to the period from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977, during which the govt of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi used special provisions in the Constitution to impose sweeping executive and legislative consequences on the country.
