There may be a delay in the launch of Elon Musk's satellite internet service Starlink and Amazon Web's satellite service in India. The Department of Telecommunications has placed a big demand in front of these two companies. Recently, the government had sought suggestions from stakeholders regarding spectrum allocation, price, etc. for satellite internet service. The government is soon going to start the process of spectrum allocation to service providers.
DoT placed this demand.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked Elon Musk's Starlink and Amazon's satellite service to complete security-related compliance soon. The Department of Telecommunications has approved Airtel's Eutelsat Oneweb and Jio's SES satellite internet service. DoT has asked both these companies to submit documents related to the necessary security parameters to proceed with the application process.
According to ET's report, these two companies have not yet submitted information related to security compliance. The Department of Telecommunications has written a letter to both of these companies about this. An official associated with this matter says that the government will send a reminder after waiting for a few days. If these companies accept all the conditions related to security, only then their application will be processed further.
Instructions for sharing documents
The official says that many areas in the country are very sensitive from the security point of view. In such a situation, satellite companies will have to share documents related to data, coverage areas, etc. with the government. Only after this, the government will offer these companies to start service in India. Elon Musk has applied for the Global Mobile Personal Communication Satellite Service (GMPCS) license in October 2022. At the same time, Amazon has applied last year.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently taking feedback from other stakeholders regarding the pricing and other conditions of the spectrum of satellite internet service. In India, Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone-Idea will provide satellite services along with terrestrial field mobile services. At the same time, Amazon and Starlink are also going to be their main competitors in satellite services.
