Business more than 130 years old
You may be surprised to know that the business of Dabbawalas in Mumbai is more than 130 years old. A chapter titled The Saga of the Tiffin Carriers will be included in the English book of class 9 in Kerala. The name of the writer who wrote this chapter is Hugh and Colleen Gantzer. Kerala's State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has included the story of Dabbawalas in its updated syllabus for the 2024 session. In this lesson, students will be told how the Dabbawalas started in Mumbai.
Delivers food to 2 lakh people daily
Mumbai Dabbawalas deliver hot food to Mumbaikars at their homes and government and private offices. Their delivery system is praised not only in India but also abroad. If you have been to Mumbai or live there, you will definitely see these Dabbawalas carrying many tiffins with them. They have a strong organization that delivers tiffins. More than 5000 people are associated with this organization. This organization delivers food to 2 lakh people daily in the city.
How did it start?
It is said that it was started in 1890 by Mahadu Havji Bache. Initially, this work was limited to only 100 people (customers), but over time it gradually reached 2 lakh people. Dabbawalas in Mumbai also have a special uniform, they can usually be seen wearing white kurta-pajama, a Gandhi cap on the head, Rudraksha beads around the neck, and Kolhapuri slippers on the feet.
