CBI on Tuesday arrested Dheeraj in Rs. 34,000 crore bank fraud case. He was taken into custody in Mumbai on Monday evening.
According to the central probe agency’s charges, Dheeraj Wadhwan and his brother Kapil allegedly defrauded a consortium of 17 banks to the tune of Rs. 34,000.
Wadhwani was also earlier arrested by the agency in connection to the Yes Bank.
17 banks, led by Union Bank of India, of approximately Rs 34,615 crore. The fraud involved securing large loans, allegedly misappropriating these funds, and defaulting on repayments by falsifying DHFL’s books.
The case has been ongoing since July 2022 when the Wadhawans were arrested following complaints from the Union Bank of India about the fraudulent loans. This case is part of a broader investigation into financial misconduct at DHFL, which had been facing scrutiny since 2019 due to allegations of financial mismanagement and defaults on repayments.
The charge sheet, which was filed within the statutory period, details their alleged involvement in these fraudulent activities. The Supreme Court recently cancelled the bail previously granted to both Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan, indicating serious errors by the lower courts in their earlier decisions to grant bail.
