Amid protests by gig workers at the home services startup Urban Company's Mumbai office against the new work policy promoting overwork and offering less job security, founder Abhiraj Singh Bhal alleged collusion of local politicians and unions seeking to gain political clout.

The new work policy by Urban Company includes a minimum rating requirement and automated task assignments. Partners argue that these changes and limits on cancellations put their jobs at risk.

Bhal explained the company's new policies that penalise gig workers for low ratings and restrict them from cancelling assignments. He emphasised the company's preference for direct communication with partners and stated that they do not recognise or have any relation with people outside the UC community.

He explained that partners are expected to fulfil orders during their indicated working hours, with allowances made for emergencies.

Abhiraj noted that most partners are happy with the new policies and the flexibility offered, while a fraction is protesting because they want everything the way it was when they had the option of both choosing the time slots and accepting orders.
