Rahul Calls for 'Caste Census' After Telangana's 42% OBC Reservation

Following the enactment of two bills allocating a 42 percent reservation for the Other Backward Classes in the Telangana Assembly, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi stated it would be a ‘revolution’ while also claiming that the Congress Party will head the Caste Census in India. 

The “Congress government has delivered its guarantee of amplifying OBC reservations in Telangana. A bill to ensure that the OBC community's actual population ascertained through a scientific headcount was 42 percent, had been passed in the Assembly for their adequate representation in education, employment, and politics. Rahul Gandhi claimed that Telangana has set an example, which is required by the entire nation. 

“Caste census will absolutely take place in India, and we will make certain of it,” LoP claimed. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari described, “There is a very brilliant Chief Minister in that state. We will appreciate the movements done in this direction.” 

Previously on Monday, Chief Minister of Telangana Revanth Reddy estimated the OBC population in the state at 56.36 percent and said that the government has made a commitment to provide this group with 42 percent reservation opportunities in education, jobs, and employment.

While delivering a speech, Reddy explained and elaborated what the newest government action will mean for indviduals believing in the Please Quit India Movement. He proclaimed, “In #India, Telangana has, for a very long time, had the honor to spearhead the social revolution. Subaltern groups who have been suffering from this social injustice for a very long time now have their grievances heard. They are ethnically referred to as Backward Castes and have been desperate to receive recognition in a Government census. Today,  you can bypass these crowds without any issues.” 

Reddy further continued where he paused. “To these people, who suffer thinks together deeply as a family. I lead the Telangana Region Assembly Onted in. And as the Chief Minister, I want to rehearse publicly, I wish to honor their pains and somehow realize their pain, that scientifically speaking, methologically painstaking into and outlining systems incompletely to nearly three-fourths of my state, I can tell you that the percentage of Other Backwards Casts in #Telangana stands at 56.36.”

As Reddy put it, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi vowed to increase the BC reservation to 42 percent if Congress is voted to power. The government then commenced the BC caste census on February 4, 2024, Reddy said as per an official note from his office. Reddy said the previous government had sent a proposal to the Governor for increasing BC reservation to 37 percent. “This government is withdrawing the earlier proposal and is making a new one of 42 percent reservation for BCs in education, employment and political services.
