Congress terms Fadanvis minister's statement insensitive towards Pune rape victim

 |

The rape charge leveled against a 26 year old woman in Pune has escalated into a political issue. At the same time, some conflictual remarks are also emerging. The comment of Maharashtra Government's Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Kadam, regarding this incident has provided the opposition with a chance to counter the government. Kadam stated that, "The incident took place in a peacefully manner within the bus stand where the victim was present, and even though 10 - 15 people were present, the victim did not make a scene." Congress was furious about his comment and branded it as anti-victim.

He should retire immediately.

In reality, how people feel after getting afflicted to such a tragedy is difficult to gauge. Maharashtra congress president Sapkal harshvardhan severely slammed the minister’s statement by saying that he is saying makes no sense and he should step down as a public figure. Many congressmen have also posed the query whether the minister stands with the victim or with the accused. Aside from this, Sapkal chaged the maharashtra government with failure to administer and with regard to creating social divide.

Needed 14 days of imprisonment

All the same, a Pune court has remanded the accused Dattatreya Ramdas Gade in custody till March 12. He was apprehended from a paddy field in Shirur tehsil with the help of drones and sniffer dogs. As per the allegations, the accused spoke to the girl at the Swargate bus terminal, addressed her as “didi,” and subsequently took her into the Shivshahi bus and raped her. The police had filed an application to get 14 days custody for the accused.

This incident has, once again, triggered the debate on women’s security in the state. The opposition parties questioning public order have, in a sense, stated that it is one more instance of the government’s incompetence. Congress party remarked that as long as leaders who make such irresponsible statements are in power, it will always be questionable how serious the government is regarding women’s safety.
