Officials reported on Thursday that NAAC has removed a fifth of its reviewers due to a lack of quality control. (‘Quality Control’ means evaluating a reviewer’s report and ensuring trusted results are availed.)

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is reported to have brought on board more than a thousand new reviewers as recommended by a committee that had some vice chancellors of some universities.

As part of the investigation of irregularities in assessments, NAAC in particular has stopped all physical inspections of colleges, colleges are now inspected entirely on the internet.

NAAC is a self-governed body instituted by the University Grants Commission in 1994 for controlling the systematic evaluation and accreditation of higher educational institutions so as to motivate and improve standards and enhancement of the quality of education.

Officials reported that NAAC used to have over 7000 assessors which included reviewers who were primarily responsible for evaluating HEIs in the grading process of the institutions.

Revising the performance and behavior of the evaluators had always been part of the system but, a lot of discrepancies meant action was taken quite heavily this time. We have deleted all those students who took online tests sans learning materials and teachers and we have cut the number of reviewers in fifths. There were many who were there on the list, but were not performing any assessments recently, so they were fled as well,” The reticent member of NAAC said. “Depending on the review, some have been stripped of their privileges for a period of six months, some for a year and others have been entirely set aside from these tasks. The set aside reviewers have also engaged in training more than 1000 additional reviewers, who are currently in the process of being trained,” added the official. The peers assessors in question were debarred by NAAC. This action seemed fit after the CBI investigation for the alleged bribery of a NAAC were granted by the KLEF case for A++ rating for its university without any further queries.

The senior official added, “Evaluations will now be carried out completely online which will do away with campus visits for colleges. For universities, however, there will be a mix – most of the evaluations will be done off the site, but some of the reviewers will travel to the campuses to maintain some level of control."
