Somdev Devvarman is of the opinion that the absence of a sizeable progress in Indian tennis has been a glaring deficit and it is largely due to Indian tennis failing to utilize the international success garnered by Sania Mirza as an inspiration to further boost Indian tennis.

To put it mildly, Indian participation at the 2025 Australian Open is thin on the ground as Rohan Bopanna is the only Indian entry in the doubles event and Sumit Nagal is the lone representative in the men’s singles. The ladies grid fared no better as there are no Indian women players joining the qualifiers for the event. The event is set to start on January 12, 2025 with the final Sunday fixture.

Five Indian players made their mark in the prestigious Grand Australian Open Tennis Championships but since then the prize pool has become elusive with India’s top seeded Sania Mirza also falling off. She along with the other Indians won six single and 43 double titles which earned them a spot at the top, this however was back in 2015. The reputation however was short lived as Mirzi, Bhupathi, Rohan and Leander were unable to maintain their momentum.

According to Somdev Devvarman , a former world No.62, other than Rohan Bopanna, Mahesh, Leander, and Mirza, no other player was able to compete.

According to Somdev Devvarman, in an interview, if there would have been a proper grassroots system for training, we would have been able to achieve success in tennis. He added that, “Sania had a tremendous achievement and at that time India was doing extremely well in tennis. Sania Mirza was a star for this nation and I am sure every girl would want to pick a tennis racket for her.”

I've already said that 'the failures of the Indian tennis administration in maximizing the efforts of Sania, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna were appalling goals that they fell short of' - Mid-Devvarman. According to End of Year report 2021, India has been struggling to have a single male or female tennis player winning an ATP or WTA tournament for the last 7 years.

The current scenario of Women Tennis in India and Female Sania's sonography and success are poles apart. The peak appreciation she's earned is attaining a ranking of either 65 or 66, however, we must understand that there was once a time when Bianka Andreescu won the Indian Wells behind closed doors and attained a ranking of 11. If India wants to unlock a Grand Slam winning a female tennis player requires handholding. This furthermore validates my point that majority of our Indian male promotion players are tennis educated but are completely illiterate at promoting a female Indian tennis player.

‘Sumit Nagal, while facing tough odds, may still have a chance’

Sumit Nagal saw a shocking ease to be given the no. 96 male ranking and fending off Tomas Machac became an almost impossible task after Machac beat on the Australian Open that taking place in 2025. Yet, this isn’t an impossible scenario as Machac and Nagal are still hail for being the toughest of the contenders in their game.

There is a common consensus among the experts that Devvarman will find it tough beating Machac and Nagal but the upset he caused last time might prove handy for him. “Sumit Nagal has got a really tough draw and while facing Adrian Mannarino might seem impossible, he was ranked No 66 and to beat him when the year began was a tough row of sail to comb through, he should focus on beating Machac next.” Advised Devvarman.

To add more to the drama, Devvarman went on to blame all the injustice done to the tennis community on the captains, AITA and even the support camp. “AITA doesn’t step ways optimally for the players. The David Cup serves everyone drama and politics, its infuriating.” He claimed.

‘Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka are the favourites’

Devvarman makes it clear that Gauff is a strong contender, although he has Aryna Sabalenka as favourite for the event. Australian Open 2025 may however come up with some surprises. “Of course, the top seeds are always the favourites. But, one of them could definitely be Gauff but I still expect Aryna to be the top seed. Defending a title is always difficult, and Aryna is at a disadvantage coming in as the two time defending champion. Still, I do believe Rybakina has the potential to do well in Miami,” he said.

“In the men’s draw, Jannik Sinner should be the favourite but Daniil Medvedev could give him trouble. Carlos Alcaraz is the favourite on the other side of the draw, while Novak Djokovic will be aiming for the 25th title with Andy Murray alongside him as a coach,” he added.
