RBI: 98.18% of ₹2,000 Notes Returned, ₹6,471 Crore Still in Circulation

The Reserve Bank of India informed on Saturday that 98.18% of the Rs. 2000 banknotes has been re-introduced into the banking system, and there are only Rs. 6.471 crores worth of these notes left in the hands of the general public.

The bank notes of Rs. 2000 were delinked from circulation as announced by RBI on May 19, 2023.

The ranging value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation, which as of May 19, 2023 was at Rs. 3.56 lakh crores, reduced down to Rs. 6.471 crores as of February 28, 2025, said RBI.

As mentioned in their statement, “Thus, 98.18 percent of circulating Rs. 2000 banknotes post May 19, 2023 has since been complied to.” 

Until October 7, 2023, all branches of the bank were allowed to deposit and/or accept exchanges for Rs. 2000 notes in the relaxation of rules. Some of these facilities are still available unlike for the general public at the 19 issue offices of the RBI. 

Additionally, any Indian citizen can transfer Reserve Bank of India Rs 2000 note from their nearest post office to their respective issue office via India post in order to get credited to their bank accounts.

The Rs 2000 banknotes are still considered valid forms of payment.
