China reacted with sanctions of its own against Rubio, which prohibit him from going to China during 2020, over the fact that he is an activist for Hong Kong democracy and the Uyghur people in Xinjiang. If he happens to become the secretary of state everything remains uncertain as to how this will impact his interactions with Chinese officials.
