Will Babar Azam Open in 2025 CT? Pakistan Coach Drops Bombshell!

Pakistan’s Head Coach Aaqib Javed Confirms Babar Azam to Open in ODIs and Champions Trophy
Pakistan’s head coach Aaqib Javed has confirmed that Babar Azam will open the batting in all ODIs against South Africa and continue in the same role for the ICC Champions Trophy. Javed emphasized that facing the new ball is not unfamiliar territory for Babar and believes that his presence at the top will maximize Pakistan’s use of the powerplay.
Babar’s Form Under Scrutiny Ahead of Champions Trophy
Babar’s batting position has become a hot topic of discussion, especially after his underwhelming performance in the recent Tri-Series against New Zealand and South Africa.
Tri-Series Performance:
- Matches: 3
- Runs: 62
- Average: 20.66
- Best Score: 29 runs in the final vs New Zealand (February 14)
Following Pakistan’s loss in the final against New Zealand, concerns have been raised about Babar’s struggles against medium pacers like Michael Bracewell, Wiaan Mulder, and Nathan Smith, none of whom are considered elite fast bowlers.
Javed Defends Decision to Promote Babar as Opener
Addressing the concerns in a post-match press conference, Javed dismissed doubts over Babar’s form and reaffirmed Pakistan’s trust in his abilities:
"If you look at the away series against South Africa, Babar Azam had to bat in the first over in all games. Then, when Saim Ayub got injured, he had to open in Tests too. These pitches are not troubling batters early on, so we wanted our best batter to take advantage of the powerplay."
Javed further backed Babar, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver strong performances in crucial matches:
"I believe in these conditions, Babar should open, and I am hopeful he will play a big innings when it matters the most."
Babar Azam to Open in Champions Trophy as Well
Despite mixed reactions to the move, Pakistan’s management is sticking to their plan, confirming that Babar will open in the ICC Champions Trophy, where Pakistan will kick off their campaign against New Zealand on February 19 in Karachi.
With Pakistan banking on Babar Azam’s class at the top of the order, all eyes will be on him to deliver in the upcoming high-stakes tournament.
