Why Bangladesh's Growing Ties with India's 'Enemy' is Bad News"

Bangladesh's Growing Ties with China: A Concern for India
Since the change in power in Bangladesh, relations between New Delhi and Dhaka have not been as robust. Under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus, there were widespread reports of violence against Hindus, and Bangladesh began moving closer to Pakistan, India’s traditional rival. Now, the Yunus government has taken another step that could raise concerns for India: deepening its relationship with China.
China Expands Medical Support to Bangladesh
In a significant development, China has opened three high-tech hospitals in its Yunnan province exclusively for Bangladeshi patients. These hospitals are designed to provide advanced medical treatment and offer Bangladeshis easier access to healthcare in China.
According to the Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo, officials from both Dhaka and Beijing are working together to simplify visa processes, enhance medical facilities, and establish translation teams to assist patients. Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen mentioned that if everything goes according to plan, the first group of Bangladeshi patients could begin receiving treatment in China by March.
Expanding China-Bangladesh Medical Collaboration
During a recent visit to China, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, Tauhid Hussain, proposed the creation of a Bangladesh-China Friendship Hospital in Dhaka. China is now awaiting a detailed proposal from Bangladesh on this initiative.
In addition, China is fulfilling its earlier commitment to provide cutting-edge medical equipment to aid those injured during the uprisings in Bangladesh last July and August. A shipment of 20 advanced robotic medical devices is expected to arrive in Dhaka next month.
The three hospitals in China set up for Bangladeshi patients are:
- People’s Hospital of Yunnan Province
- First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University
- Fuwai Yunnan Hospital
Why This Matters for India
While Bangladesh sending its patients to China for medical treatment might seem like a routine healthcare decision, the move has broader geopolitical implications that could be concerning for India.
-
Rising Bangladesh-China Relations Amid India-China Tensions: India has had long-standing tensions with China, particularly following recent border clashes. Although there has been some disengagement between the two armies, China’s strategic maneuvers continue to keep India on high alert. Bangladesh’s growing ties with China could increase China’s influence in South Asia, a region where India has traditionally maintained dominance.
-
Bangladesh Strengthening Ties with Pakistan and China: It’s not just China—Bangladesh has also been working to improve its relations with Pakistan, another key rival of India. The increasing influence of both Pakistan and China in Bangladesh could shift the regional power dynamics, making India wary of any future diplomatic or strategic shifts in the region.
-
Potential Loss of Medical Tourism Revenue for India: For years, Bangladesh has been a significant source of medical tourists to India, contributing to both India’s healthcare sector and its economic ties with Bangladesh. If many of these patients now opt for treatment in China, it could lead to a noticeable drop in India’s medical tourism revenue from Bangladesh.
India’s Response
Given these developments, India will need to closely monitor Bangladesh’s evolving relations with China and Pakistan. Whether this new medical collaboration is just about healthcare or signals deeper strategic ties is something that remains to be seen in the coming years.
