Two Iranian Warships Dock in Mumbai for Goodwill & Training Visit

According to the Indian Navy, two Iranian warships are now in Mumbai for a goodwill and training visit, which comes as a step towards enhanced cooperation in the maritime domain and reinforcing friendship between both countries. On Tuesday, the Mission Commander and the Commanding Officers of IRIS Boushehr and IRIS Lavan paid a courtesy visit to Rear Admiral Vidyadhar Harke, Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at Headquarters Western Naval Command. They talked about the training programs and other common interests of both navies. The flotilla, composed of two vessels, carrying almost 220 officer cadets, is on a summer training cruise in the Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy, with band, was in attendance to greet the ships and gave them a warm reception. The Indian Navy further informed that the deployment is commanded by Captain Mohammad Saberi. He is the Mission Commander and Senior Captain Seyed Ali Madani is commanding the Lavan. Commander Hamed Bahramian is in charge of the Boushehr.

“The Iranian Navy’s training flotilla made of IRIS Boushehr and IRIS Lavan is on goodwill and training visit to Mumbai from February 25-28 of 2025,” it said.  

Multifaceted activities have been put in place to bolster the relations between the NAVIES including Sports and simulation training visits for Officer Cadets to the Naval Dockyard.   

Demonstrating the close diplomatic relations that exist between both nations, a recent incident involving the Indian Navy took place whereby an officer cadet attached to the IRIS Boushehr was medically evacuated at sea.  

At around 3 am of Feb 20 a medical evacuation request was received which was accepted and nearly immediately the Indian Navy and Coast Guard commenced actions.

According to the Navy’s report, the officer cadet was provided prompt medical attention at INHS Asvini and was subsequently evacuated from IRIS Boushehr, where he was given medical assistance. He was then placed on the Iranian ship that arrived during the port’s opening on Tuesday.

Relations between India and Iran have developed over the years for business purposes, especially in the context of defence. 

The Iranian’s ships visiting further consolidate our relations and represents another important milestone in the improvement of cooperation between the navies at sea, the Navy explained.
