Telangana Tunnel Collapse: Sniffer Dogs Deployed for Search

With part of it caving in, some of the sludge got trapped and solidified inside the Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel in Telangana, which resulted in eight people being stuck. Rescuers, as per the statement by District Collector B Santhosh on Wednesday, are planning to use sniffer dogs to locate the trapped individuals.

The official further added that as per the information he has, the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) should be able to provide their view on soil stability and the other matters today so that the action plan can be structured accordingly, as per their suggestions.

Santhosh also said that the team's progress was helped by a bit by a thermal fishing boat which allowed them to reach the site of the accident in the tunnel.

“Thermal snorkeling certainly helped a bunch, Initially there was a hurdle of 40 meters (from the accident spot). The sludge was there. But that has solidified now to the maximum extent. So the team could go up to the accident spot,” said Santhosh.

“Well, we have a sniffer dog. We will take it. So with the dog's help, we will try to locate the trapped individuals,” told the official to PTI.

He further added by saying that the main goal right now is to find the people concerned.

Rescue operators along with specialists from GSI and NGRI are now dealing with the consequences of the sinkhole that took place in a section of the SLBC project site and have focused on aiding the eight trapped individuals first. 

India may be dealing with a growing tunnel construction industry, but the environmental concerns have strict detractors.

For new excavation to be achieved, some space has to be created at the tunnel boring machine and the officials are optimistic the conveyor belt will be operational by today.

In the overnight hours, the team that reached the precise site of the accident on the second day after the incident was said to have tried to contact the people who were trapped but there was no answer.
