SC Dismisses Plea on Crowd Control After New Delhi Railway Stampede

On Friday, the Supreme Court of India rejected a request involving crowd control measures at the New Delhi Railway Station, which claimed that over 200 people have died in stampedes that have occurred at the station. That request would have needed to be properly framed for us to even consider it,” claimed advocate on record and petitioner counsel Rishabh Suryavanshi.
“Is there any proof that 200 have died?” asked Justices B R Gavai and P K Mishra.
The railways have also issued notices to many witnesses claiming that more than one video of stampedes occurring at the railways has been posted on social media websites such as X.
“We also issue this direction. Those persons can approach the court,” the bench claimed.
The bench further suggested whether the petitioner thinks the relevant officials were sitting idle on the pertinent issue raised in the case.

The counsel further claimed that this petition has been framed under the drone surveillance law. Videotapes made by the authority of the witness at a hearing where a person gives evidence, or something from a later stage of proceedings.
The bench said the concerned shall now be more discreete and sensitive while with these matters.
The Railways had previously been asked on February 19 by a Delhi High Court bench to look into setting a cap on the number of passengers allowed on the trains as well as the sale of platform tickets. It was an issue raised in a PIL following the recent stampede at the New Delhi railway station.
The high court had directed the concerned authorities to explain the particulars of the decisions that were taken on such issues in its affidavit.
At least 18 people were killed in the stampede that took place at the New Delhi Railway Station on February 15 and during the Kumbh Mela, a staggering number of people began flooding the station, as a horde of people were keen to travel to Prayagraj.
