Rohit Sharma Given BIG Warning by BCCI, Selectors Speak Out

As far as the Indian cricket team is concerned, the skipper Rohit Sharma seems to be on the precipice of becoming out of place in the international cricket format. Rohit, who scored only 31 runs in three Tests on tour of Australia and had to drop himself down for the fifth and final Test in Sydney last month, has been retained till at least ICC Champions Trophy of 2025 as the ODI captain.
After taking the side to the finals of ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and win the T20 World Cup 2024, now BCCI has entrusted the Indian captain with the challenge of performing in Champions Trophy 2025. But as it has been stated in the TOI newspaper, the BCCI selectors have already discussed with Rohit concerning his plans after the Champions Trophy.
The report notes that BCCI are currently on the lookout for a ‘long term’ captain for the Test as well as the limited over formats. Rohit, at the present level, will be 40 in April this year and being 40 is not an obstacle to play in the global event, he will be able to perform in the next ODI World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2027.
The selectors and people in the board had this discussion with Rohit before the last selection committee meeting. He has been advised on the areas that he needs to come up with a plan and choose how to go about his future after the Champions Trophy. Some strategies regarding the next WTC cycle and the ODI World Cup is already in place in the team management’s mind. They want to be certain all have a similar perception to ease transition, a source in BCCI was quoted by TOI.
If the team management ignores a persisting weakness, the cricket board will be criticised for failing to address it They will not allow Hardik Pandya to become captain of the team again.
Shubman Gill has already been promoted to the position of the vice-captain for the three-match ODI series which starts with the first match at Nagpur on Thursday. The latter also sheds light on possibilities of Mumbai Indian captain Hardik Pandya to regain captaincy of the team.
He was the T20 captain of india before being replaced in the team by his MI teamate Suryakumar Yadav also. Jasprit Bumrah, they pointed out, would have been an apt choice for ranking the side in Test cricket, however, his back problem is a cause of concern making him a short term selection.
“This mere fact will always keep Bumrah’s chances of a long Test series or even to complete a full season in a doubtful state of affairs. The selectors may feel the need of having a more, I would like to say, stable element. Gill has been identified as a future captain material but his Test performance has not been very impressive. could also fit the description while as a new comer Yashashvi Jaiswal can be developed for the captaincy role,” said a BCCI source to TOI.
India will start their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh on February 20 to be played in Dubai whereas the much anticipated India versus Pakistan match will be played on February 23 in the same venue.
