Costa Rica Joins Panama and Guatemala in Repatriating Illegal Migrants from the US

In a move similar to Panama and Guatemala, Costa Rica has announced its readiness to help repatriate illegal immigrants deported from the United States, who are nationals of other countries. Costa Rica’s president’s office released a statement on Monday, confirming that 200 migrants from Central Asia and India will be arriving on a commercial flight from the US this Wednesday.

“The government of Costa Rica has agreed to collaborate with the United States in facilitating the return of 200 illegal immigrants to their home countries,” the statement read. “These individuals are from Central Asia and India,” it further clarified.

The first group of deported migrants will land in Costa Rica on Wednesday, where they will be temporarily housed at a migrant care center near the Panamanian border. From there, they will be transported to their respective countries of origin.

Costa Rica also clarified that the costs of this repatriation process will be fully covered by the US government, with oversight provided by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
