Manu Bhaker who is a double Olympic medalist along with the youngest chess champion D Gukesh, were received with an overwhelming applause when presenting with the awarded session medanayo status infront of president Droupadi Murmu on 17th of January,2021 during the glitter filled sports award ceremony in new Delhi.Other big recipients of the huge honor of major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, have been men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and Praveen Kumar a paralympics gold medalist in high jumping. The annual honors and other special awards were coordinated at the Rashtrapati Bhavan located in new delhi.Harmanpreet Singh has been a significant player for the national hockey team that won bronze medals in the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. Same goes for Praveen Kumar, who was born with a short left leg, but went on to add a gold medal in the Paris Olympics to his earlier silver medals in Japan.The Arjuna Award was given to 32 athletes and for the very first time, 17 athletes from para athletes were included in the list for the honor. The recipients include the bronze medal winning wrestlers at the Paris Olympics, Aman Sehrawat, shooters Swapnil Kusale Sarabjot Singh, and members of the men’s hockey team that include Jarmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Sanjay and Abhishek.

The Arjuna Award winners this time had a huge percentage of para athletes among their ranks thanks to their astounding effort at the Paris Paralympics where they won a total of 29 medals which included 7 golds and 9 silvers.

Youngster Manu Bhaker 22 became the first athlete of independent India to win two medals in a single Olympic edition after she secured gold at 10m Air pistol individual and the mixed team event.

Last month, D Gukesh, aged 18, made history by becoming the youngest chess world champion after overpowering Ding Liren from China. He is now the second Indian to have grown into a chess world champion alongside the famous Viswanathan Anand.
