Hyderabad's Rising Cases of Sexual Offences Against Minors: A Dark Reality

Hyderabad: Rising Concerns Over Sexual Offenses Against Minors
The growing number of sexual offenses against minors in Hyderabad has raised serious alarms. Young men are exploiting the innocence and vulnerability of girls, luring them with promises of love and marriage before trapping them in dangerous and exploitative situations.
Authorities are deeply concerned, as many victims of these crimes are left with lasting trauma, often requiring specialized counseling to help them recover from the psychological scars. A recent case involved a 15-year-old girl who was deceived by a young man into going to his house. Although the police managed to rescue her, emotional manipulation later led the girl to retract her statement, highlighting the complex dynamics at play in these incidents.
Each month, Hyderabad sees over 60 cases of kidnapping, disappearance, and sexual assault, with around 70% of the victims being deceived before leaving home.
Root Causes of Child Exploitation
Several factors contribute to the exploitation of children, including:
- Domestic Violence & Family Struggles: Issues such as domestic abuse, strained relationships, and single-parent households often leave children more vulnerable.
- Economic Hardships: Poverty, substance abuse, and financial instability within families play a significant role.
- Lack of Supervision: Unmonitored access to social media and the internet creates opportunities for exploitation.
- Psychological Vulnerabilities: Poor mental and emotional health among minors can make them easier targets.
- Cultural Pressures: Strict family discipline, societal norms, and misinformation about relationships can also contribute to the problem.
Bharosa: A Lifeline for Survivors
The Bharosa Center plays an essential role in supporting survivors of such offenses by:

- Ensuring confidentiality and safety for the victims.
Parents Must Stay Vigilant
Dr. Lavanya Nayak Jadhav, DCP of the Women’s Safety Department, stresses the importance of open communication between parents and children. She urges parents to talk to their children regularly, monitor their online activities, educate them about healthy relationships, and raise awareness about the dangers of deception. It's crucial to report incidents of sexual harassment promptly, while also ensuring the victim’s identity is protected.
Through vigilance, education, and support systems like Bharosa, the hope is to reduce these offenses and provide a safer environment for young people.
