Good News for Travelers! Australia Lifts Travel Advisory for Assam, but with a Few Exceptions

Travelers, rejoice! Australia has officially lifted its travel advisory for the Indian state of Assam, allowing tourists to visit most areas of the state. However, the updated advisory still recommends avoiding certain regions where the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) is in effect.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Thursday that the Australian government has revised its travel guidelines, permitting Australian citizens to travel to all districts of Assam, except for Tinsukia, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, and Sibsagar. These areas are still under AFSPA, which imposes special powers on the military and security forces.

"Tourists from Australia can now explore the entire state, except in the districts where AFSPA remains in place," said Sarma in a press conference. He also shared that the Australian High Commission has indicated that once the AFSPA is lifted from these districts, the travel advisory may be further relaxed.

Australia's decision follows similar travel advisories previously issued by Germany, which also cautioned its citizens about the law-and-order situation in Assam. Sarma expressed hope that Germany would soon follow Australia’s lead and ease its travel restrictions.

In related news, Assam is preparing for a major international business summit, Advantage Assam, set to take place from February 24. Heads of 35 foreign missions have already confirmed their participation, with the number potentially reaching 50. The visiting foreign diplomats will also tour Kaziranga National Park and witness the world record-breaking 'Jhumoir Binandini' dance performance by the tea tribe community.

The Prime Minister’s office has arranged a special aircraft to bring in the foreign envoys, and all expenses will be covered by the Ministry of External Affairs. Sarma also highlighted that roadshows conducted in countries like Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Bhutan, and Japan in the lead-up to the summit have contributed to a strong international presence.

Assam is now set to be in the spotlight as it continues to work toward improved security and growing international partnerships.
