Big Blow for Team India Ahead of India vs Pakistan 2025 Champions Trophy

The Indian cricket team has suffered an unexpected setback just before their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign kicks off against Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday. A key member of the squad, bowling coach Morne Morkel, has had to fly back to South Africa following the passing of his father, Albert. The 40-year-old former South African pacer departed Dubai on Monday, and it’s unclear when he will rejoin the team.
Morkel’s departure is a blow for the team, as his expertise would have been invaluable, especially ahead of the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash on Sunday, February 23. Morkel, who previously served as Pakistan's bowling coach, has a wealth of experience in the international arena, having played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for South Africa, claiming 309 Test wickets, 188 ODI wickets, and 47 T20 wickets.
His brother, Albie Morkel, also had an extensive cricket career and was part of the Chennai Super Kings team that won the IPL title under MS Dhoni.
With the Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh just days away, the absence of Morkel will be felt. However, the Indian squad continues to prepare intensely for the tournament.
Wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, who’s expected to play a pivotal role in the middle order, focused on power hitting during Monday’s training session. Known for his technical precision, Rahul worked on a more aggressive approach, particularly in clearing the ropes. He’s aiming to enhance his finishing abilities, having recently scored 40 off 29 balls in a match against England. His performance at No. 5 or 6 could be crucial in the latter stages of matches.
Shreyas Iyer, another middle-order batter known for his aggressive play, also honed his power-hitting skills, while opener Shubman Gill, fresh from an impressive ODI series against England (scoring 87, 60, and 112), continued to show his excellent form, playing authoritative drives and pulls.
Skipper Rohit Sharma, who made a stunning 119 in the second ODI against England, was sharp in practice, focusing on finesse shots and timing. Virat Kohli, who returned to form with a composed 52 in the third ODI, worked on his technique, emphasizing control and timing.
The team is gearing up for a crucial tournament, but with Morne Morkel's absence, they will need to adapt quickly as they face off against Bangladesh in their opening match.
