Avalanche Strikes Badrinath: 47 Workers Trapped, 10 Rescued So Far

In Badrinath, located in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, an avalanche occurred on Friday which encapsulated around 50 workers who planned on clearing snow in order to facilitate better movement for the army in the region. So far, rescue workers have been able to save around 10 individuals, and at least 47 individuals still remain trapped after the avalanche affected a BRO camp in close proximity to Mana village. 

The workers were employed with a private firm that has been hired by BRO. District magistrate Sandeep Tiwari has confirmed this statement adding that as of now, no casualties have been reported. News agency ANI quoted Tiwari as saying, “There are no satellite phones available therefore clear communication is not able to be established.”  

The Central Command of the Indian Army posted pictures related to the rescuing efforts. In a post on X, the account stated, “An avalanche hit a GREF camp next to Mana village in the Garhwal sector and a number of labourers are believed to be trapped. Due to continuous heavy snowfall and minor avalanches , the Indian army’s IBEX brigade commenced rescue operations as soon as possible. So far, 10 personnel hav have been rescued and are receiving treatment from the army. Further soldiers and equipment are being moved forward to the location.”
